The Social and Medical Aspects of the Work Stress-Related Cardiovascular Disorders

Abstract
|
|
|
Background and Objectives£º Psychosocial factors, including work-related stress, has been linked to the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular disorders. Recently, social concern about work-related stress and disputes, which are surrounded with judgements of work relatedness for cardiovascular sequelae, is increasing.
Materials and Methods£º This article reviews the concept and the legal aspects of compensation for job stress related cardiovascular disorders. Furthermore, we focus on the typical factors and pathophysiology of stress related cardiovascular disorders.
Results£º Recent statistics shows that workers compensation claims for cardiovascular diseases are increasing. Prospective cohort studies show a independent aetiological and prognostic role for psychosocial work characteristics. High job strain, long working hours, and shiftwork can play an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders.
Conclusion£º To prevent work stress related cardiovascular diseases, appropirated primary and secondary preventive measures and treatment programs are needed.
